The Afterglow of Grace

One of the sweetest sensations of the soul is an unexpected wave of gratitude washing through and drowning any nagging sense of disquietude and leaving gentle peace in its stead.  It comes without conjuring or striving. It is a gift of Divine Spirit. A glimpse of what could be, of bliss, and perfect harmony. It never lingers long enough to be harnessed and employed at will; leaving the recipient of this grace longing for more and more. Perhaps that’s the whole idea. God gives us a hint of pure bliss like the proverbial dangling carrot so that we will seek harder, infuse our desire for Divinity with more passion, grab hold of the horns of the altar, wrestle with the angel and not give up until we’ve moved from one spiritual plane to the next.

Just last week, I was walking the hall from my desk to the reception area to deliver some outgoing mail when it happened. There was no change in circumstance or grand spiritual thoughts firing through my lobes. I was just conducting the mundane business of life. I rounded the corner and was suddenly awash with an overwhelming sense of wellness with my soul and deep, inexplicable gratitude for the life I’ve been given. All petty selfish desires vanished if only for that moment. It’s a peripheral experience; an awareness that lingers only as long as I don’t look right at it, or try to capture it; a companion that will settle beside me, but elude me if I try to reach for its hand.

Evasive as it is, it leaves in its wake an afterglow. Not as powerful as the original surge of energy, but still sweet and strong enough to influence thoughts, and when the mind is subdued, the spirit can soar and that’s when I am my most authentic self.

Moments of grace like this are fleeting and subtle. Keep watch so as not to miss them when they arrive, and be intentional about basking in the afterglow when they pass.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2

  1. Wow- all I can say is that I felt “soothed” after reading this post. You have a great gift of communication. I look forward to reading more of your entries.

    1. Thank you – sincerely. That is one of the best compliments I could receive. I am honored that you feel that way and if there is anything soothing about the words I type it is because of the Divine One who inspires me.

  2. I could almost not believe my eyes/mind/soul when I read this post, because this is a feeling that I have had on several occasions in the past few months. It is not something I was able to put into words and you have described it perfectly.
